1953 – “El Chispas” (Sparks) Robot – Antoni Gual Segura (Spanish)

Thanks to Antonio Gual of Barcelona, Spain who notified me of his father's old robot.  The text is also by Antonio.

In the 50's my father Antoni Gual Segura and his job mates at the local radio station Radio Vilafranca designed and built "El Chispas" (Sparks). It moved its arms, spoke and had a window at its navel where you could see sparks. It made a big sensation in the Fiesta Mayor of that year!
Ten years ago, visiting the rural church of Torrelles de Foix we had the occasion to meet the priest that had married my parents in 1956, he still had the robot in a corner of his house.

Antonio has provided an update to say  "…the wires in the head could produce a travelling spark. The robot stood some weeks at the window of my father's radio repair shop, and the sparks were seen as dangerous by the people passing by so they were finally confined to the peephole.
Another curious information is the body has a wood structure and the skin is wood sheet of the type used to line furniture. The body was made in a carpenter shop!"

1957 – Hombre FORCYLOR – (Spanish)

Hombre FORCYLOR at a 1960 Trade Exhibition in Barcelona.

"Hombre FORCYLOR" appeared as a promotional robot for a manufacturer of sheets, branded "Forcylor-Trinxet".

English translation……

You interrogate the robot …!?

every day, starting tomorrow, in stores SIMEON, Plaza Santa Ana, 14

The "Man FORCYLOR", is an amazing character, a true man of steel, whose colossal stature exceeds eight feet and weigh more than 200 kgs. Many foreign technicians who know of its existence, awaiting official exhibition with great anticipation. This is the first robot built entirely in Spain, based on physical laws inspired by cybernetics, advocated by noted Spanish engineer Torres-Quevedo.

The robot "FORCYLOR-Trinxet Man" to obey and answer few questions and commands are transmitted by him to remote ultrahigh frequencies with a single channel audio discriminator fourteen-tones. An extensive network of relays, actuating those engines, allowing the robot, "Man-Trinxet FORCYLOR" can walk in all directions, spin around, move the arms provided paths claws, eyes shooting rays by using two powerful spotlights flashing. There is a material connection between the robot and the command post. The "Man-Trinxet FORCYLOR", is a wonderful wit that contrasts dramatically with the crude dolls built to date abroad. His technique, uncommon, goes hand in hand with its harmonious aesthetic, noteworthy that all materials and workmanship are fully domestic.

Any further information on this robot welcomed.

1968 – “La Casa Jonás” – José Miguel de Prada Poole (Spanish)

Jonah's House [La Casa Jonás in Spanish]

Developed as a project named "Movil" [Cell or Cellular in English]. A pneumatic cellular structure whereby the wallsegments could be elongated or reduced according to the air-pressure in bellows attached to each side of the  cell or segment.

LA CASA JONAS, 1968

AUTOR: José Miguel de Prada Poole

CONSTRUIDO: ETSAM Madrid 1968.

English Translation:

The home learning [II] 197x Jonah's house [JM Prada Poole]

In relation to sensitive environments or structures that have capacity for change, are very interesting studies Prada Poole structures that present the ability to move in both directions of space.  From these structural searches the house comes Jonah, a home that responds to the use and the wishes of its occupant, and he explains in his book "The Power of Space":

The Bible tells us that Jonah spent three consecutive days within a large whale but tells us nothing about their experience habitativa. The "forms" of room that we use have hardly changed substantially for thousands of years.Transfer of a certain capacity of DIALOGUE AND INTELLIGENCE to Architecture.

What will life in a large animal?

How to understand a living space to dialogue?

Housing … sniffed the water, and identified with the wishes of its occupant waving went to the beach.  At sunset, his body became more and more transparent to allow the sea to watch the twilight … "
