1930 – Remarque the Robot (German)

… In 1929, Fritz Lang's Metropolis, which featured the female robot Maria, opened in Japan and proved a wild success. The following year saw an exhibition titled "Tokyo in the Year 1990" at the Matsuzakawa department store in the capital's Ueno area that featured a lifelike German robot dressed in a uniform and named Remarque, after All Quiet of the Western Front author Erich Maria Remarque. Archival images [see above] show it saluting a large crowd with a broad smile and doffing its peaked cap in front of two ladies in kimino.
